Dealing with Burnout

How to Avoid Burnout
Burnout is one of the most frequent problems faced by many professionals. It is often assumed that burnout is a direct result of stress; however, this is not always the case. In considering how you can avoid burnout it is important that you first learn how to recognize the signs of potential burnout.
Chronic fatigue-this includes frequent exhaustion, and feeling run down
Problems controlling anger-especially towards those who place demands on you
Criticizing yourself
Feeling as though you are being besieged by those in ‘command’
Weight gain or loss
Commonly experiencing headaches as well as stomach problems
Problems sleeping
Shortness of breath
Feeling helpless
Experiencing frequent feelings of suspicion
Increasing the amount of risks that you take
You will have a better chance of avoiding and fighting burnout if you recognize this problem in its early stages. While quitting your job may at first appear to be a very appealing option for resolving the problem, or avoiding it, realistically we know that this isn’t the best option unless you have reached very serious burnout.

Burnout is most commonly caused by working too hard. Even if you enjoy your job this can be a major problem. Ask yourself if you are working too much as a result of necessity or choice. If possible, slow down. If you feel it’s not possible, re-evaluate your options. Continuing to work too hard may force you to make choices later that you would rather not. Take some personal time. At quitting time, go home and do not take any work with you. It will still be there tomorrow. Spend your non-work time relaxing.
If you find that the source of your stress or burnout is due to a difficult boss, you still have choices open to you. If possible, try discussing the situation with your supervisor to find ways that you can effect a better working relationship.
In the event that your burnout is due to being short staffed, you may need to consider prioritizing your workload, especially if beefing up the staff is not an option. Remember that you can only accomplish so much and attempting to cram too much work into your workday will probably only result in mistakes. Find out what is most important and concentrate on performing those tasks well.
If you are taking on more than you can simply handle, learn the fine art of saying no. When handled firmly, but politely, this can be a good solution for many people.
Finally, consider whether the career you’re involved in is the right choice for you. The days of sticking with one career until retirement are over. More and more people are choosing to experiment with different career options at various points in their career. Consider whether a different field might make a difference.
