Resolving Job Relatted Stress
Some research indicates that job stress is becoming somewhat of an American epidemic. It would seem that more and more people are becoming stressed out at their jobs. While employment has always tended to cause stress to some degree, the levels of employment related stress that many employees are now experiencing is causing significant problems, especially in terms of health problems. Employment related stress also increases the amount and types of risks that employees are willing to take, often to the detriment on their own safety as well as others. According to research, more than 80% of American employees claim they are experiencing employment related stress at some point during their career. Nearly ¾ of employees say that this stress manifests itself as neck pain, while almost half claim it causes problems with sleeping. Another third report problems sleeping as a direct result of employment related stress.
While stress can be an inherent part of employment, this doesn’t mean it has to cause so many problems that it affects your health or causes you to take dangerous risks. There are a number of things you can do to control and manage the amount of stress you experience in relation to work.
Traditionally, activities such as medication and exercise have worked well to help people cope with stress. If you are particularly stressed out; however, you may need to take further steps.
The first step is to determine exactly what it is that causing you work related stress. It could be due to the stability of your work, problems with co-workers, your working relationship with your supervisor or simply not liking what you do. While you may not be able to control everything about your work environment, there are some things you can control, such as the amount of work you have to do or to some degree, office politics. Try to determine what is bothering you the most and whether you have the power to change anything about those things. If you have the power to make changes, do what you can to reduce your stress. If you can’t make changes, the accept the situation and make a resolution not to let it bother you.
In the event that you find these techniques simply do not work for you, it may be time to recognize that you are in the wrong field all together. It’s important to recognize that not everyone is able to function well in a high pressure environment. While some people seem to thrive on deadlines, others feel extreme amounts of stress. Ask yourself which category you fall into and decide whether you are able to tune out certain stressors within your job or whether it might be time to consider a career change.
